Engineering is about more than solving equations—it’s about solving problems. That lesson was on full display during a recent senior design project at the University of North Texas, where a team of mechanical engineering students transformed a concept into a fully functional fluid flow laboratory system that will educate future students for years to come.
The project challenged the students to design and build a modular apparatus capable of demonstrating a variety of fluid mechanics principles. But unlike a typical classroom assignment, success wasn’t measured by calculations alone. Every component had to be designed, assembled, tested, and refined until it functioned as intended.
By the project’s completion, the students had created a professional-quality laboratory station that gives future engineering students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with real equipment and real-world testing.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the most impressive aspects of the project was the students’ commitment to building the system themselves.
From assembling the piping to troubleshooting the final installation, the team took ownership of every stage of the process. Along the way, they encountered the same types of challenges engineers face every day—design revisions, fabrication decisions, and finding creative solutions to unexpected problems.
That creativity was evident in one particularly thoughtful feature: custom-designed, 3D-printed valve guards. The guards prevent valves from being accidentally adjusted during experiments, helping maintain consistent test conditions while protecting the integrity of the lab exercises. It’s a simple addition that demonstrates the kind of practical thinking that comes from designing equipment for real users.
